Not in the way ads suggest. Keto supplements do not put you in ketosis on their own. BHB salts can raise blood ketones briefly at gram doses, but even with a diet, 10 g and 24 g a day added no significant weight or fat loss over placebo. The Retride label itself pairs its 60 mg blend with a 70/25/5 keto diet.
Do keto BHB pills like Retride work if you skip the keto diet?
Not in the way most ads suggest. A Cleveland Clinic dietitian says keto supplements do not put you in ketosis on their own and cannot stand in for a keto diet (Cleveland Clinic, 2023).
Many keto pill ads hint at the opposite.
Ketosis is a state where your body burns fat for fuel instead of sugar (Cleveland Clinic, 2022). You get there by eating very few carbs for days. A capsule does not change what is on your plate.
What does a BHB pill like Retride actually do in your body?
A BHB pill adds a small amount of a ketone to your blood for a short time. It does this whether or not you eat carbs, but the amount depends on the dose.
BHB stands for beta-hydroxybutyrate, a ketone your liver makes during ketosis. In pills it is bound to a mineral, which is why it is called a BHB salt.
- 1
You swallow a BHB salt
The ketone travels with a mineral partner. A label lists it as sodium, magnesium or calcium beta-hydroxybutyrate.
- 2
Blood ketones rise a little
In a lab study, salt drinks giving 12 to 24 g of BHB raised blood levels to about 1 mM.
- 3
Your meals still set the fuel
If you eat carbs, your body keeps running mostly on sugar. Cutting carbs is what starts real ketosis.
- 4
Weight follows the diet
In diet trials, people on BHB salts did not lose more than people on a placebo.
The 1 mM number comes from a careful lab study of ketone drinks (Stubbs et al., 2017). Those doses are measured in grams, not milligrams.
Why does the Retride label tell you to follow a keto diet?
Because the diet is what produces ketosis. The Retride label says: “For best results in achieving ketosis, aim for a diet ratio of 70% fat, 25% protein, and 5% carbohydrates.”
That line ties the goal of ketosis to food, not to the capsule.

The label ratio is a little different from a typical keto plan. Harvard nutrition experts describe keto as about 70-80% fat, 10-20% protein and 5-10% carbs (Harvard Nutrition Source, 2025).
| Part of the diet | Retride label tip | Typical keto diet (Harvard) |
|---|---|---|
| Fat | 70% | 70-80% |
| Protein | 25% | 10-20% |
| Carbohydrates | 5% | 5-10% |
| Where it comes from | Bottle label, suggested use | Harvard Nutrition Source diet review |
The label's 25% protein is higher than the usual keto range. You can read every line of the bottle on the Retride label and Supplement Facts page.
What do studies show about BHB salts and weight loss?
They show no added weight loss, even when people also dieted. Two controlled trials gave BHB salts or a placebo to people on the same low-calorie plan.
In an 8-week trial, 51 adults took about 10 g a day of BHB salts with diet and walking. Body composition did not differ significantly from placebo (Roeth et al., 2025).
In a 6-week trial, people on a controlled low-calorie keto diet took about 24 g a day of BHB salts. Adding the salts did not increase weight or fat loss over placebo (Buga et al., 2021).
| Study | Daily BHB salt | Diet | What happened |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roeth et al., 2025 | About 10 g a day, 8 weeks | Low-calorie diet plus walking | No significant body composition difference vs placebo |
| Buga et al., 2021 | About 24 g a day, 6 weeks | Controlled low-calorie keto diet | No extra weight or fat loss vs placebo |
| Stubbs et al., 2017 | About 12-24 g in one drink | Lab visit, not a diet trial | Blood ketones reached only about 1 mM |
Both trials gave the salts a strong setting: a planned diet and a large dose. If they added nothing there, a pill with no diet has even less to work with.
Is the diet or the pill doing the work?
The diet. In both weight trials, the placebo group ate the same way, and the pill made no significant difference.
Even the keto diet itself has a modest edge. A review of 13 trials found people on very-low-carb keto lost about 0.9 kg more than people on a low-fat diet after a year or more (Bueno et al., 2013).
Harvard agrees that after one year, keto results are not much different from other diets.
What happens if you take BHB and eat sugar?
You still digest and use the sugar. Nothing in the research shows that a BHB pill blocks carbs or cancels a dessert.
Short trials did find that ketone drinks raised blood BHB and lowered blood sugar slightly. Ketone esters worked better than salts, and there was little long-term data (Falkenhain et al., 2022).
Those were large drinks tested for hours. They do not show that a small capsule lets you eat carbs and stay in ketosis.
How does a 60 mg blend like Retride compare with study doses?
It is far smaller. Retride lists one 60 mg proprietary blend per two-capsule serving, and that weight includes the magnesium, calcium and sodium as well as the BHB.
Human BHB salt studies used about 5,000 to 30,000 mg of BHB per dose or per day. That makes the study doses roughly 80 to 500 times larger than the whole blend.
The label does not say how much of each salt is inside, or how much of the 60 mg is BHB. There is also no study of the finished Retride formula. Our post on how much BHB studies actually use walks through the numbers one by one.
Who should talk to a doctor before keto or ketone products?
Anyone who takes daily medicine or has a health condition should ask first. That includes people on diabetes drugs, especially SGLT2 inhibitors, and people on diuretics or blood-pressure, heart or kidney medicines.
People on a low-sodium diet should ask too, since BHB salts carry minerals. Ketosis from a diet is not the same as ketoacidosis, a medical emergency, but your doctor should know your plan.
The Retride label adds its own caution. Pregnant or nursing women, anyone under 18 and anyone with a known medical condition should consult a physician before use. The Retride ingredients page explains each BHB salt on the label.
Is there a sensible way to think about Retride without keto?
Yes: see it as a small add-on to a keto routine, not a replacement for one. The label itself pairs Retride with a 70/25/5 diet, and that pairing is the honest reading.
If you plan to try keto, the pill is optional and the diet is the part to plan.
Before you buy any keto pill, check: 0 of 3 checked
If you still want to try Retride with the label's diet, the Retride pricing page lists the 2, 3 and 6-bottle packs at $79, $69 or $49 a bottle on the sales page. Confirm the total at checkout. The 60-day money-back window runs from the purchase date.

BHB pills without keto: common questions
Questions people type into Google and Bing, answered from the label and the sources on this page.
Do keto pills work if you eat carbs?
There is no good evidence that they do. Keto supplements do not put you in ketosis by themselves or replace a keto diet.
Can BHB put you in ketosis without dieting?
No. A BHB salt can nudge blood ketones up for a while at gram doses, but that is not the same as the ketosis your body makes when you cut carbs.
Do exogenous ketones work if you're not in ketosis?
At large doses they show up in your blood. In one study, 12 to 24 g of BHB from salts raised blood ketones to about 1 mM.
Can you lose weight with keto pills and no diet?
No study we cite shows that. Even with a diet, adding 10 or 24 g a day of BHB salts gave no significant extra weight or fat loss over a placebo.
What happens if you take BHB and eat sugar?
Your body still uses the sugar. Nothing in the research shows a BHB pill cancels sugar or carbs.
Why do keto pill labels tell you to follow a keto diet?
Because the diet is what drives ketosis. The Retride label says to aim for 70% fat, 25% protein and 5% carbs for best results in achieving ketosis.
Is the diet or the pill doing the work?
In the trials, the diet. Both groups ate the same way, and the BHB group did not lose significantly more than the placebo group.
What do studies show about BHB and weight loss?
Two controlled trials, at about 10 g and 24 g of BHB salts a day for 6 to 8 weeks, found no significant extra weight or fat loss compared with placebo.
Will Retride's 60 mg blend do anything on a normal diet?
There is no study of the finished Retride formula. Its whole blend is 60 mg a day, far below the gram doses that failed to add weight loss in trials.
