Choosing a BHB Supplement: A Dose-First Buyer's Checklist

Judge a BHB supplement by its dose first. Human studies used about 5-30 g of BHB and still found no added weight loss, so a milligram blend is a tiny fraction. Treat proprietary blends, fat-melting promises, celebrity ads and free trials as red flags. Retride passes on seller contact and claim wording but fails on dose: its whole blend is 60 mg.
Why choose a BHB supplement by its dose first?
A dose-first check keeps you from paying for amounts too small to matter. Keto pill labels look alike, so the numbers are what set them apart.
The FDA does not approve supplements before they are sold (FDA, 2022). The FTC expects health claims to rest on human trials that used the same dose and formula (FTC, 2022). So start with one question: how much BHB is in it?
The Retride buyer's checklist for any BHB supplement
Run these ten checks on any BHB product before you pay. Tick each one as the label or the seller confirms it.

How much BHB should a keto supplement have?
No BHB dose is proven to cause weight loss. Human studies used about 5-30 g of BHB per dose or per day (GSSI, 2022), and even those amounts did not beat placebo for weight.
Use these five steps to compare any label with the research.
- 1
Find the serving
Read the Supplement Facts panel and note how many capsules make one serving.
- 2
Find the BHB amount
Look for the BHB or blend weight in milligrams or grams per serving.
- 3
Convert to grams
Divide milligrams by 1,000. A 60 mg blend is 0.06 g.
- 4
Compare with studies
Human BHB salt studies used about 5-30 g per dose or per day.
- 5
Weigh the gap
If the label amount is a tiny fraction of the study range, the study results do not carry over.
The meter runs that method on the Retride label: bands show study ranges, dots show the bottle.
Retride's whole 60 mg blend, minerals included, is roughly 1/80 to 1/500 of the amounts used in human studies. Sources: (Roeth et al., 2025) (GSSI, 2022) (Buga et al., 2021)
Even 12-24 g of BHB from salts raised blood ketones to only about 1 mM, less than ketone esters. Sources: (Stubbs et al., 2017)
The magnesium share of the blend is not printed; the whole blend is 60 mg, so it cannot reach this limit. Sources: (NIH ODS, 2026)

Are proprietary blends a red flag? The Retride example
A proprietary blend is a yellow flag, not proof of a bad product. Federal rules let a blend list its total weight and the order of its ingredients, but not each amount (eCFR, n.d.).
The Retride blend lists magnesium, calcium and sodium BHB under one 60 mg total. That weight also includes the minerals, so the pure BHB is less than 60 mg.

When a blend is the whole formula, the blend hides every single dose. Ask the seller how much of each salt the blend holds.
If the answer is “not published”, judge the total. For Retride, the total is already far below study amounts.
Ketone salts vs ketone esters: which is better?
Ketone esters raise blood ketones more than salts. In a head-to-head study, the same BHB dose reached about 2.8 mM as an ester against about 1.0 mM as a salt (Stubbs et al., 2017).
A review of 43 trials also found esters worked better than salts for blood ketones (Falkenhain et al., 2022). Neither form is proven to cause weight loss.
| Point | BHB salts | Ketone esters |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | BHB bound to sodium, magnesium, calcium or potassium | BHB bound to an alcohol |
| Blood ketones | About 1.0 mM from 12-24 g of BHB | About 2.8 mM at the same dose |
| Stomach upset | Most symptoms at a high salt dose (Stubbs et al., 2019) | Usually mild |
| Mineral load | High at gram doses (GSSI, 2022) | Little or none |
How to check the sodium and magnesium in a BHB product
Check the mineral lines on the panel, then compare them with daily limits. Gram doses of BHB salts carry a lot of minerals: one 24 g-a-day study served 1,874 mg of sodium, 570 mg of calcium and 57 mg of magnesium per serving (Buga et al., 2021).
At 60 mg for the whole blend, Retride sits at the other end. Its mineral load is trivial next to any daily limit.
| Mineral | Daily limit or Daily Value | Most it could be in Retride |
|---|---|---|
| Sodium | Daily Value under 2,300 mg (FDA, 2024) | Under 60 mg (share not printed) |
| Magnesium | Supplement upper limit 350 mg (NIH ODS, 2026) | Under 60 mg (share not printed) |
| Calcium | Upper limit 2,000-2,500 mg (NIH ODS, n.d.) | Under 60 mg (share not printed) |
Which claims on keto pills are red flags?
Some claims are false no matter who makes them. The FTC lists weight-loss promises that cannot be true, such as losing weight whatever you eat or for all users (FTC, 2014).
Keto pill ads have also used fake celebrity endorsements and cheap trials that turned into repeat charges (AARP, 2020).
- “Lose weight without diet or exercise”
- “Puts you in ketosis” or “melts fat”
- Shark Tank, celebrity or TV doctor endorsements
- A “free” bottle that only asks for shipping
- “FDA approved” or an FDA certificate
The FDA does not issue registration certificates (FDA, 2024). The keto pill scams post shows more examples.
Retride scored against the buyer's checklist
Here is the checklist run on Retride, using only the label and the seller's terms. It passes on seller contact and claim wording and fails on dose.
A fail does not mean the capsules are unsafe. It means the research cannot predict a result from this bottle.
| Check | What Retride shows | Result |
|---|---|---|
| BHB amount printed | 60 mg blend total, minerals included | Partial |
| Dose near studies | 60 mg vs about 5-30 g in trials | Fail |
| Single amounts | None for the three salts | Fail |
| Claim wording | Support claims with an asterisk and FDA statement | Pass |
| FDA wording | “Manufactured in an FDA registered facility”, not approval | Pass |
| Seller contact | Order support +1 (302) 200-3480, office and returns address | Pass |
| Refund terms | 60 days from purchase; buyer pays return shipping | Pass |
| Billing terms | Whether any pack renews is not published | Ask |
| Lab report | Not published; lot and CoA are draft labels | Fail |
Lab reports show what a batch held, though quality seals do not prove safety or results (NIH ODS, 2023). The testing and quality page covers what is known for Retride.
Is a keto supplement like Retride worth buying?
For weight loss, the evidence says probably not. NIH finds little scientific evidence that weight-loss supplements work (NIH ODS, 2021), and BHB salt trials at gram doses found no added loss.
If you want a small daily capsule from a seller you can phone, Retride meets that bar. If you want amounts that match the studies, this formula does not get there.
Pros
- Seller with a phone desk and a returns address
- 60-day money-back window from purchase
- No stimulant listed
Cons
- 60 mg blend, far below study doses
- No amount for each salt
- Gelatin capsule, not vegan
The diet matters more than any pill. Start with the keto and BHB guide.
Choosing a BHB supplement: common questions
Questions people type into Google and Bing, answered from the label and the sources on this page.
What should I look for in a BHB supplement?
Look for a printed BHB amount per serving, single amounts for each salt, a clear mineral load and claims that stay in support wording. Then check the seller's refund and billing terms.
How much BHB should a keto supplement have?
No dose is proven to cause weight loss. Human studies used about 5-30 g of BHB, and even 10-24 g a day added no significant weight loss over placebo (Roeth et al., 2025) (Buga et al., 2021).
Are proprietary blends a red flag?
They are a yellow flag. A blend must list its total weight but not each amount (eCFR, n.d.), so you cannot match any one salt to a study dose.
Ketone salts vs ketone esters: which is better?
Esters raise blood ketones more. At the same BHB dose, an ester drink reached about 2.8 mM against about 1.0 mM for salts (Stubbs et al., 2017). Neither is proven to cause weight loss.
Are keto gummies better than keto pills?
The form does not change the basic problem. A Cleveland Clinic dietitian says keto supplements do not put you in ketosis on their own and lack long-term studies (Cleveland Clinic, 2023).
What claims on keto pills are red flags?
Promises of weight loss without diet changes, for everyone, or fast and permanent are on the FTC list of claims that cannot be true (FTC, 2014). Fake celebrity ads and “free” trials are warning signs too.
Are cheap keto pills the same as expensive ones?
Price tells you nothing about the dose. Compare the BHB amount per serving and the cost per gram of BHB, not the price per bottle.
Is it worth buying a keto supplement at all?
For weight loss, the evidence is weak. NIH says there is little scientific evidence that weight-loss supplements work (NIH ODS, 2021), and the keto diet itself does the heavy lifting for ketosis.
